DAMAGED SKIN

Aging & Environmentally Damaged Skin
As of age 25, our skin begins to show signs of aging. On one hand, cellular renewal slows down, on the other, cells synthesize less protein. This leads to a weakening of the skin, which reveals signs of aging more easily.

Skin aging on the face is characterized by three main occurrences:
- the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
- the tendency of volumes to diminish and creases to deepen
- the slackening of the facial skin due to a loss of elasticity and skin dryness
Aging Skin:
Signs:  You have fine lines on your face. You have deep wrinkles, particularly between your eyebrows and around your mouth and “smile lines”.
What you observe:  You have permanent fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes. “I always look tired because of the wrinkles around my eyes.”
“The skin around my eyes looks withered.”
“It looks like I’m constantly knitting my brows.”
“My deep wrinkles make me look stern and older.”
Inside your skin:  A breakdown of collagen fibers
With aging and daily exposure to UV rays, collagen fibers – responsible for skin support – break down, causing fine lines and then wrinkles to form.
Talk to your dermatologist about it.

Why YOU?  Today, when we speak of skin aging, we differentiate intrinsic skin aging (caused by aging) from extrinsic skin-aging (caused by external factors).
Intrinsic aging:  This describes skin changes linked to the normal aging process, leading to a thinning of all skin layers and reduced activity of the skin glands. As the dermis loses its elasticity, wrinkles and fine lines begin to form. The causes of all of these changes are chronological, genetic and hormonal.
Extrinsic aging:  External factors such as UV rays, pollution and smoking aggravate the aging process. They can accelerate and reinforce aging. The quantity of UV rays that we are exposed to during our life is a determining factor, to the extent that we talk of “photo-aging”.

All of these factors generate free radicals that modify the genetic heritage of the cells and break down their DNA. As a result, year after year, the quality of our cells is damaged.

A good daily skincare routine:

Combat skin aging:   The formation of wrinkles and fine lines on the face is a continuous process linked to skin aging and exposure to UV rays. To prevent and correct wrinkles and fine lines, use a daily reinforced skincare product with anti-UVA properties, Vitamin C and Mexoryl® XL.
Protect your eye contour:    The skin around the eyes is particularly fine and fragile. This area is the first victim of skin aging, UV exposure and the continuous movements of the eyes. The signs begin as light and charming “expression lines” before becoming crow’s-feet, which are deeply lined.

To prevent the skin around the eyes from becoming lined too quickly, use a daily eye contour skincare product with Vitamin C.
Avoid the sun or use extreme protection:   Exposure to the sun is a major factor in skin aging.
Opt for a photo stable anti-UVA sun care product that offers extreme protection.
And don’t forget your hands and décolleté!
Conceal wrinkles and fine lines and boost the radiance of your complexion Make-up should not be avoided. In fact, it can provide an excellent means of hiding wrinkles and fine lines.

Begin by energizing the eyes with a complexion corrector.

Then, opt for a non-comedogenic and oil-free foundation that will moisturize your skin all day long while offering natural coverage of wrinkles and fine lines.

Finally, apply a loose powder to set your make-up.
Avoid cigarettes:   Nicotine generates free radicals and reduces blood irrigation to your skin, which intensifies skin aging. Cigarettes should thus be avoided.

La Roche-Posay Dermatologists answer your questions:

Are wrinkles and fine lines unavoidable?
Yes, they are one of the visible signs of skin aging. However, they can be delayed by a healthy lifestyle. No cigarettes, no excessive exposure to the sun without sun protection and the use of a day cream that blocks the damaging action of UVA rays while correcting existing wrinkles.
Do our genetics play a role in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles?
Yes
Skin aging differs from one person to the next. The rapidity of this process is determined genetically.
Is stress another factor in the appearance of lines and wrinkles?
Yes because it generates free radicals.
I have fine lines on my face. Can I still enjoy the sun?
Avoid exposure to the sun as much as possible as it accelerates skin aging. If not be sure to use extreme protection.
Can I use foundation to conceal my fine lines and wrinkles?
Of course, make-up is very useful as it helps conceal wrinkles and fine lines and evens out the complexion.
Be sure to choose non-comedogenic textures that are adapted to your skin type. They should provide invisible coverage while smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines and boosting the radiance of the complexion.

There are a multitude of methods on offer, but your choice should only be made after a discussion with your dermatologist. There are several factors that come into play. First, the depth of the wrinkles that you wish to diminish, their location, your age and finally, the state of your skin.

I have fine lines:
Vitamin A acid, or tretinoin, is a medicine. It is a powerful antioxidant that is applied to the skin each night in the form of a cream.
Vitamin A acid stimulates cellular renewal, improves tissue structure and reduces the depth of wrinkles.

Techniques offered by dermatologists:
Fine lines around the mouth:  Microdermabrasion
This technique consists of "sanding" the skin. It can involve the spraying of micro-crystals or a rotating wheel. To obtain good results, several sessions are necessary.

Fine lines on the entire face:  Peeling
This is a chemical exfoliation: it involves the application of chemical agents on the targeted areas. Their action is more or less intensive depending on the active ingredients used and the intensity of the fine lines, several sessions may be necessary.

Wrinkles on skin overexposed to the sun, Eyelid wrinkles, deep wrinkles around the eyes and mouth :  Resurfacing lasers.
They remove the upper layer of the dermis (with its fine lines) and allow for the regeneration of new, smoother skin. Better skin tension can also be obtained with certain lasers. Depletion occurs through the "vaporization" of cells on the upper layer of the skin. They help "erase" wrinkles and stimulate the production of collagen by sanding down the surface of the epidermis. They act by vaporization. The dermatologist moves a laser beam over the face.

Deep wrinkles on the entire face: The Erbium Yag Laser offers detailed treatment of each imperfection on the skin.

The CO2 Laser is very powerful and treats all facial wrinkles in a single session, with the client under general anesthesia.

Expression lines: Botulinum toxin - BOTOX

Botulinum toxin is injected in a targeted area in muscles responsible for expression lines. A low dose of Botulinum toxin, purified bacteria, is capable of paralyzing the muscle behind the skin contraction for a determined length of time. Result: the skin relaxes locally, the wrinkle is smoothed.

Results can be seen in 4 to 6 days.
